Etsy Listing Keywords: How to Find the Exact Search Terms Buyers Actually Use

July 19, 2026 · 6 min read

You've written a title. You've filled all 13 tags. But your listing still sits on page 8.

The problem isn't that you skipped keywords. It's that you used the wrong keywords.

Etsy's search engine matches shopper queries against listing titles, tags, categories, and attributes. If your keywords don't match what buyers actually type, Etsy can't show your product. And if your keywords match but your listing doesn't convert, Etsy stops showing it anyway.

Here's the exact process to find Etsy listing keywords that real shoppers use — then place them so Etsy's algorithm rewards you with views and sales.

What Makes an Etsy Keyword "Good"

A good keyword hits three criteria:

  • Shoppers search it. Sounds obvious, but many sellers optimize for phrases they wish people searched. You need search volume.
  • It's specific enough to convert. "Necklace" gets searches, but someone searching "necklace" has no idea what they want. "Dainty gold birthstone necklace" signals purchase intent.
  • Your listing can realistically rank for it. Competing against 500,000 listings for "vintage dress" is a losing game. Competing against 2,000 for "1950s floral swing dress size 8" is winnable.

Every keyword decision comes back to those three filters.

Step 1: Mine Etsy's Own Search Bar (Free, Instant Data)

Etsy's autocomplete shows you what real buyers are typing right now. This is the highest-signal free data source available.

Open Etsy in an incognito window (so your personal search history doesn't skew results). Start typing your core product term, then pause.

Example: You sell handmade leather wallets.

Type leather wallet — Etsy suggests:

  • leather wallet for men
  • leather wallet RFID blocking
  • leather wallet personalized
  • leather wallet minimalist
  • leather wallet slim

Each suggestion is a real search term with volume. Write them down.

Now repeat with variations. Type wallet alone. Then leather card holder. Then minimalist wallet. Each seed term generates different suggestions.

Do this until you have at least 25 unique phrases. You'll narrow them down later.

Step 2: Analyze Competitor Tags (Ethically)

You can see exactly which tags your top competitors use. Every Etsy listing displays its tags publicly in the source code.

Open a competitor's listing that ranks on page 1 for a term you want. Right-click anywhere on the page and select View Page Source. Press Ctrl+F (or Cmd+F) and search for "tags".

You'll see a JSON block with all 13 tags listed in order.

Example from a top-ranking leather wallet listing:

"tags": ["leather wallet for men", "RFID blocking wallet", "minimalist card holder", "slim wallet men", "leather money clip", "gift for husband", "birthday gift for him", "EDC wallet", "mens leather accessories", "wallet with coin pocket", "travel wallet men", "leather goods", "handmade wallet"]

Don't copy these verbatim — Etsy penalizes duplicate content. But use them as inspiration. What themes do top sellers share? What gaps exist that you could fill?

Cross-reference these with your autocomplete list. Merge and deduplicate.

Step 3: Use Etsy's Search Results as a Keyword Validator

Type a candidate keyword into Etsy search. Look at the top of the results page — Etsy shows a bolded "Related searches" row.

Search minimalist leather wallet and Etsy might show:

minimalist leather wallet for men | minimalist leather wallet RFID | minimalist leather wallet slim | minimalist leather wallet bifold

These are real, recent search refinements. Add any that fit your product to your keyword list.

Then scroll the first 20 results. Read the titles. Which phrases keep appearing? If 15 of 20 top listings use "RFID blocking," that term signals relevance to Etsy's algorithm.

Step 4: Layer in External Keyword Tools (Optional but Powerful)

Etsy doesn't give you a keyword volume tool. Third-party tools like eRank, Marmalead, and EverBee estimate search volume and competition level based on Etsy's data.

If you're serious about ranking, run your 25+ candidate phrases through one of these tools. Look for:

  • High "clicks" or "demand" — the phrase gets searched
  • Low to medium "competition" — you have a realistic shot at ranking
  • Rising trend — interest is growing, not declining

Free alternative: Google's "People also ask" and "Related searches" at the bottom of search results pages. Etsy shoppers often start on Google, so Google's related searches overlap with Etsy queries.

Step 5: Prioritize Your Final Keyword List

You can't use every keyword. Etsy gives you 13 tags and one title. You need to prioritize.

Use this scoring system. Rate each candidate phrase 1–3 in three categories:

Criteria 1 Point 2 Points 3 Points
Search relevance Vaguely related Clearly related Exact product match
Competition Thousands of listings Hundreds of listings Dozens of listings
Intent Browsing ("wallet ideas") Comparing ("best leather wallet") Buying ("leather wallet for men RFID")

Total your scores. Your top 13–15 phrases (scores of 7–9) become your primary keywords. The rest go into your description naturally.

Step 6: Place Keywords Where Etsy Reads Them

Etsy's algorithm scans specific fields in order of importance. Place your strongest keywords first.

Title (highest weight)

Front-load your most important keyword. Etsy truncates titles after about 40 characters on mobile, so the first 4–6 words matter most.

Weak: "Beautiful Handmade Genuine Leather Wallet for Men and Women with RFID Blocking Technology and Multiple Card Slots"

Strong: "RFID Leather Wallet for Men – Slim Minimalist Card Holder with Coin Pocket"

The strong version leads with the core search term, then adds modifiers. Etsy reads the first words first.

Tags (second highest weight)

Your 13 tags are your second-most-important ranking signal. Use exact phrases, not single words.

Don't do this: "leather", "wallet", "men", "gift" — these waste tags because Etsy matches phrases, not individual words.

Do this: "leather wallet for men", "RFID blocking wallet", "slim minimalist card holder"

Each tag should be a search phrase someone would actually type. Use all 13 characters allowed per tag. Never leave a tag half-empty.

Categories and Attributes

Etsy's category tree and attribute fields (style, color, material, occasion) are structured data that tell Etsy exactly what your product is. Fill every applicable attribute.

If Etsy asks "Is this item a gift?" and you say yes, your listing becomes eligible for "gift for him" searches even without that exact tag.

Description (lowest weight for ranking, highest for conversion)

Keywords in your description barely affect search ranking. But they matter for conversion — a shopper who reads keywords they recognize feels confident they found the right product.

Write naturally. Include your secondary keywords in context. Don't stuff.

What to Do After Your Keywords Are Placed

Keywords get you found. They don't make the sale.

Once a shopper clicks your listing, Etsy tracks how long they stay and whether they buy. If people click and leave quickly, Etsy interprets that as a mismatch and drops your ranking — even with perfect keywords.

After you optimize your keywords, audit your listing's ability to hold attention and convert. Check your Etsy Listing View Duration and Etsy Listing Photos for specific fixes.

The One-Keyword Test

Here's a quick way to tell if your keyword research is working.

Pick your most important keyword phrase. Search it on Etsy incognito. Are you on page 1? Page 2? Page 5+?

If you're not on page 1 within 2–3 weeks of optimizing, your keywords or your listing quality score need work. The fix is rarely "add more keywords." It's usually "replace weak keywords with better ones" or "improve conversion signals."

Stop Guessing. Get Your Exact Keyword Gaps.

Keyword research by hand works. But it's slow, and you can't see what you're missing — only what you've found.

ListingLens audits your title, all 13 tags, and description against what buyers actually search. It shows you exactly which keywords you're using well, which you're missing entirely, and which tags you should swap for higher-volume alternatives.
