Etsy Listing Optimization Checklist: 17 Checks That Turn Views into Sales

June 21, 2026 · 5 min read

You listed your product. You filled in the fields. You hit publish.

But the views aren't coming — or they're coming and nobody's buying.

That gap between "listed" and "selling" is almost always the same problem: your listing isn't optimized for how Etsy's search engine works or how buyers decide to click "Add to Cart."

This checklist covers both. Use it on every listing — new or existing — and you'll catch the mistakes that cost you sales.

How to Use This Checklist

Go through each section in order. For every check, answer yes or no. If it's a no, make the fix before moving on. A single unchecked item can tank an otherwise good listing.

1. Title Optimization

Your title is the single strongest signal Etsy search uses to understand what you're selling. It's also the first thing a buyer reads.

Check 1: Does your title lead with your primary keyword?

Put your most important search phrase in the first 40 characters. Buyers scan left to right, and Etsy weights early words more heavily.

  • Bad: "Amazing Handmade Gift for Her – Sterling Silver Minimalist Dainty Necklace"
  • Better: "Dainty Sterling Silver Necklace | Minimalist Handmade Gift for Her"

Check 2: Are you using all 140 characters?

Etsy gives you 140 characters for a reason. Short titles leave ranking potential on the table. Fill the space with real keywords — not keyword stuffing — but don't waste it.

Check 3: Do you include a material, size, or color descriptor?

Buyers search by specifics: "gold hoop earrings" not just "earrings." Add at least one concrete attribute (material, size, color, style) to your title.

2. Tags (All 13 of Them)

Etsy gives you 13 tags, each up to 20 characters. Most sellers use 8–10 and call it done. That's a mistake.

Check 4: Are all 13 tags filled?

Every empty tag is a missed opportunity to appear in search. Fill all 13. Even if the last few feel repetitive, use them.

Check 5: Are you using multi-word phrases, not single words?

A tag of "necklace" competes against millions of listings. A tag of "gold initial necklace" competes against a smaller, more relevant pool. Every tag should be 2–4 words.

Check 6: Do your tags repeat words from your title?

They shouldn't. Etsy already knows those words from your title. Use tags to add new keyword combinations that your title doesn't cover.

Check 7: Are you using all 20 characters per tag?

A tag like "gift" uses 4 of 20 available characters. "gift for best friend" uses 18. The second option opens more search doors.

3. Description & Copy

Your description doesn't directly boost search rank the way titles and tags do, but it decides whether a browser becomes a buyer.

Check 8: Does the first sentence answer "What is this?"

Buyers click your listing and immediately scan the first line. Tell them exactly what it is, what it's made of, and who it's for — all in the first sentence.

Check 9: Do you include dimensions or measurements?

The number-one reason for returns on Etsy is "item not as expected." List exact measurements in both imperial and metric. This builds trust and reduces messages asking "how big is this?"

Check 10: Have you listed shipping and processing times clearly?

Put processing time (how long to make it) and shipping time (how long in transit) somewhere visible in the description. Buyers who can't find this information often leave.

Check 11: Do you include care instructions?

For clothing, jewelry, candles, or any delicate item: tell the buyer how to care for it. This signals quality and reduces post-purchase complaints.

4. Photos & Visuals

Etsy's algorithm considers click-through rate when ranking listings. If your photos don't get clicks, your ranking drops — regardless of keywords.

Check 12: Is your first photo a clean, well-lit shot on a white or neutral background?

Etsy's search results show thumbnails. Busy backgrounds, bad lighting, or cluttered compositions get skipped. Your first photo should look like it belongs in a store catalog.

Check 13: Do you have at least 5 photos?

Etsy's own data shows listings with 5+ photos perform better. Show the item from multiple angles, include a scale shot (with a ruler or coin), and show it in use.

Check 14: Do you have a video?

Listings with a video get higher conversion rates, on average. It doesn't need to be cinematic — 10–15 seconds showing the item in natural light is enough.

5. Pricing & Shipping

Check 15: Is your price competitive within your niche, not undercut?

Search Etsy for your primary keyword. Look at the first two pages of results. If your price is significantly higher or lower than similar items, adjust or be prepared to explain the difference in your listing.

Check 16: Do you offer free shipping on items over $35?

Etsy boosts listings that offer free shipping on orders over $35 in US search results. If your item is over $35, build shipping into the price and mark it free.

6. Conversion Signals

Check 17: Do you have a clear return policy and FAQ section?

Buyers hesitate when they're unsure about returns. State your policy plainly. Add an FAQ section in your description that answers the three questions you get most often in messages.

The One Thing That Ties All of This Together

Here's the hard truth: you can nail every item on this checklist and still miss opportunities you can't see.

The problem is that Etsy doesn't tell you which keywords buyers are using to find your listings. You might think your title is optimized, but if buyers search for "engraved bracelet" and you wrote "personalized bangle," Etsy doesn't know those are the same thing.

That's where a tool like ListingLens comes in. It audits your listing's title, all 13 tags, and description against what buyers actually search for — then tells you the exact changes to make.

No guesswork. No "try this and see what happens."
