Etsy Listing SEO Checklist: 14 On-Page Factors to Check Before You Publish
July 4, 2026 · 6 min read
You optimized your title. You filled all 13 tags. Your listing still sits on page 5.
The problem isn't that you skipped SEO. It's that you missed one or two factors that Etsy's search algorithm considers non-negotiable. And when you miss even one, the whole listing underperforms.
This checklist covers every on-page factor that affects where your listing ranks in Etsy search. Run through it before you hit publish — or audit your existing listings with it today.
The 14-Point Etsy Listing SEO Checklist
1. Title: Front-Load Your Best Keyword
Etsy reads the first 40 characters of your title with the most weight. Your most important keyword — the exact phrase a buyer types — must appear in that window.
Check: Open your title. Is your primary keyword within the first 4–5 words?
Fix: Move it there. If you sell "Personalized Leather Journal," don't start with "Beautiful Handmade Gift for Her." Start with "Personalized Leather Journal."
2. Title: Use 140 Characters (All of Them)
Etsy gives you 140 characters for a reason. Listings that use 130+ characters tend to match more long-tail search queries than shorter titles.
Check: Count your title characters. Anything under 120 is leaving ranking potential on the table.
Fix: Add secondary keywords and descriptive phrases to the end of your title. Don't keyword-stuff — write naturally, but use the space.
3. Tags: All 13 Must Be Filled
This is the most common miss. Etsy requires exactly 13 tags. Every empty tag slot is a lost opportunity to match a buyer's search.
Check: Go to your listing. Count your tags. If you see fewer than 13, you have work to do.
Fix: Fill every slot with specific phrases. Use multi-word tags (2–4 words each). Single-word tags waste space.
4. Tags: No Duplicates Across Tags or Title
Etsy's search algorithm treats duplicate keywords across tags and title as redundant. You don't get extra credit for repeating "journal" in five tags.
Check: Scan all 13 tags. Circle any word that appears more than once across your tags and title combined.
Fix: Replace duplicates with new keyword variations. If "journal" appears in your title and three tags, swap two of those tags for phrases like "gift for writer" or "leather notebook."

5. Tags: Use Exact-Match Phrases, Not Single Words
A tag like "gift" matches almost nothing specific. A tag like "gift for mom birthday" matches exactly what a buyer types.
Check: Do any of your tags contain only one word?
Fix: Combine them. "Necklace" becomes "gold necklace for women." "Birthday" becomes "birthday gift for her."
6. Description: Lead with Your Primary Keyword in the First Sentence
Etsy indexes the first 150–200 characters of your description heavily. If the first sentence is "Welcome to my shop," you wasted that prime real estate.
Check: Read your first sentence. Does it contain your main keyword?
Fix: Rewrite it. Example: "This personalized leather journal makes a meaningful gift for writers, travelers, and anyone who loves to document their story."
7. Description: Hit 300+ Words (But Not for the Reason You Think)
Etsy's search algorithm favors listings with substantial descriptions — not because it "reads" every word, but because longer descriptions give more keyword surface area for matching.
Check: Word count of your description. Under 200 words? Too short.
Fix: Add a "Details" section. Include materials, dimensions, care instructions, gift-wrapping options, and shipping timelines. Each of those naturally includes relevant keywords.

8. Description: Include Keywords Naturally in Bullet Points
Bullet points are scannable for buyers and keyword-rich for search. Etsy indexes bullet-point content the same as paragraph content.
Check: Do your bullet points include secondary keywords like "vegan leather," "A5 size," or "engraved cover"?
Fix: Write 5–7 bullet points under a "Product Details" heading. Each bullet should answer a specific buyer question and include a natural keyword.
9. Categories: Choose the Most Specific Subcategory
Etsy's category hierarchy feeds directly into search relevance. A generic category like "Home & Living" hurts you. A specific subcategory like "Home & Living > Kitchen & Dining > Drinkware > Mugs" helps Etsy understand exactly what you sell.
Check: Click through your category path. Is it as deep as possible?
Fix: Browse Etsy's category menu and select the most granular subcategory available for your product.
10. Attributes: Fill Every Relevant One
Attributes are Etsy's structured data — things like "occasion," "color," "material," and "style." They act as direct ranking signals for filtered searches.
Check: Open your listing attributes. How many are blank?
Fix: Fill every attribute that applies. If you sell jewelry, fill "Metal Type," "Chain Length," "Clasp Type," "Occasion," "Gift For." Don't skip any.
11. Photos: First Photo Must Confirm the Search Intent
Etsy's search algorithm considers click-through rate (CTR) as a ranking signal. If your first photo doesn't match what the buyer expected from the search results, they won't click — and Etsy interprets that as a low-quality listing.
Check: Look at your first photo in search results. Does it clearly show the product in use, on a model, or against a clean background?
Fix: If your first photo is a flat lay or a confusing angle, replace it with a clear, well-lit hero shot that matches the buyer's mental image.

12. Pricing: Within the Expected Range for Your Category
Etsy's algorithm tracks whether your price is dramatically higher or lower than similar listings. Wildly out-of-range prices can suppress your visibility.
Check: Search for 5 similar products on Etsy. Where does your price fall?
Fix: If you're significantly higher, add clear value justification in your title and photos (premium materials, handmade, custom). If you're significantly lower, consider whether buyers perceive your product as cheap.
13. Shipping: Free or Calculated Shipping Preferred
Etsy has stated that listings with free shipping (or calculated shipping that shows a clear cost) rank better than listings with flat-rate shipping that seems arbitrary.
Check: What shipping option is selected?
Fix: If you can absorb the cost, enable free shipping for orders over $35. If not, use calculated shipping so Etsy shows exact rates.
14. Renewal Date: Freshness Signal
Etsy gives a slight ranking boost to recently renewed or newly listed items. A listing that hasn't been touched in 6 months loses ground.
Check: When was this listing last renewed or edited?
Fix: If it's been more than 60 days, make a meaningful edit — update a photo, rewrite the description, refresh the tags. Then save. Etsy re-indexes the listing and treats it as fresher.
How to Use This Checklist (Without Going Crazy)
You don't need to optimize all 14 factors in one sitting. Do this:
- Pick 3 listings that get views but few sales.
- Run them through this checklist. Mark each factor as pass or fail.
- Fix the fails. Start with the factors that take 5 minutes: tags, attributes, description lead sentence.
- Wait 7 days. Check if impressions and CTR improved.

The One Factor That Ties Everything Together
Every item on this checklist feeds into a single metric Etsy cares about: listing quality score. A higher score means more impressions, more clicks, and more sales.
The checklist above covers the on-page factors you control directly. But there are also off-page factors — reviews, shipping speed, shop policies — that feed into the same score. If you want the full picture, read Etsy Listing Quality Score: What It Is, How to Check Yours, and 7 Ways to Improve It.
