Etsy Listing Score: What It Is, How to Calculate Yours, and 8 Factors That Determine It

July 10, 2026 · 6 min read

Etsy doesn't show you a score for your individual listings. But every listing has one — a composite of how well it performs across the factors that Etsy's search algorithm and real buyers actually care about.

Your listing score is the difference between a product that sits at page 8 of search results and one that lands on page 1, gets clicked, and converts.

Here's what that score actually is, how to calculate yours in under 5 minutes, and the 8 factors that determine whether it's helping or hurting your shop.

What Is an Etsy Listing Score?

An Etsy listing score is a measure of how well your individual listing is optimized to be found, clicked, and purchased. It's not an official Etsy metric — Etsy doesn't publish a score for each listing — but it's the real combination of factors that determines where your listing ranks in search and whether shoppers buy when they land on it.

Think of it as a health score for that single listing. A high score means Etsy's algorithm sees your listing as relevant and trustworthy. A low score means your listing is underperforming in one or more critical areas.

How to Calculate Your Etsy Listing Score

You can calculate a rough listing score in 5 minutes using data from your Etsy shop dashboard.

Step 1: Pull your listing-level data

Go to Shop Manager > Stats > Listings. Sort by views or visits. Pick a listing with at least 100 views in the last 30 days (smaller samples aren't reliable).

Step 2: Calculate your 4 core metrics

Metric How to find it What to aim for
Click-through rate (CTR) Views ÷ Impressions × 100 4%+
Conversion rate Orders ÷ Views × 100 3%+ for most categories
View duration Average seconds per view 30+ seconds
Add-to-cart rate Carts ÷ Views × 100 8%+

Step 3: Score each metric

Give yourself points for each:

  • CTR: Under 2% = 1 point, 2–4% = 2 points, 4%+ = 3 points
  • Conversion rate: Under 1% = 1 point, 1–3% = 2 points, 3%+ = 3 points
  • View duration: Under 15s = 1 point, 15–30s = 2 points, 30s+ = 3 points
  • Add-to-cart rate: Under 4% = 1 point, 4–8% = 2 points, 8%+ = 3 points

Step 4: Calculate your total

Add your 4 scores. A 10–12 is excellent. 7–9 is average. 4–6 needs work.

This is your baseline. Every change you make should move at least one of these numbers.

The 8 Factors That Determine Your Listing Score

These are the specific, actionable factors that influence both Etsy's algorithm and buyer behavior. Each one directly affects one or more of the metrics above.

1. Title Relevance (CTR + Conversion)

Your title is the first thing shoppers see in search results. It needs to match what they actually type.

The fix: Lead with your most specific, high-intent keywords. If you sell a "Personalized Leather Wallet for Men," don't start with "Gift for Him" — start with the product. Use the full character limit (140 characters as of 2025) but keep it readable.

For a deeper breakdown, see our guide on Etsy listing titles that convert.

2. Tag Completeness (Impressions + CTR)

Etsy gives you 13 tags. Using fewer than 13 leaves ranking opportunities on the table.

The fix: Use all 13 tags. Each tag should be a specific phrase buyers search, not generic descriptors. "Anniversary gift for dad" beats "gift" every time.

Our exact 13-tag strategy walks through how to fill every slot with searchable phrases.

3. Image Quality & Variety (CTR + View Duration)

Your first photo is the single biggest factor in whether someone clicks. The next 4 determine whether they stay.

The fix:

  • Lead photo: bright, clear, one product against a clean background
  • Photo 2: product in use or styled
  • Photo 3: scale or size reference
  • Photo 4: detail shot (texture, stitching, material)
  • Photo 5: packaging or unboxing

We cover this in detail in our guide on Etsy listing photos that convert.

4. Description Completeness & Clarity (Conversion Rate)

A short or vague description kills trust. Buyers need to know exactly what they're getting.

The fix: Include dimensions, materials, care instructions, shipping time, and return policy. Use short paragraphs and bullet points. Aim for 500–1,000 characters. Readability matters more than length.

See our guide on Etsy listing description length for exact character targets.

5. Pricing Competitiveness (Conversion Rate + Add-to-Cart)

Price isn't just about being cheap. It's about perceived value matching the price tag.

The fix: Check comparable listings in your category. If you're priced higher, your photos, description, and reviews need to justify it. If you're priced lower, make sure you're not signaling "low quality."

6. Review Quality & Volume (Conversion Rate)

Reviews are social proof. A listing with 50+ reviews and a 4.8-star average will out-convert a listing with 3 reviews and 5 stars.

The fix: Follow up with every buyer. Use Etsy's "Review Reminder" feature. If you get a negative review, respond professionally and fix the issue. A thoughtful response to a 3-star review often converts better than a perfect score with no response.

7. View Duration (Conversion Rate)

If shoppers leave in under 10 seconds, your listing isn't matching their expectation. Etsy tracks this.

The fix: Check your Stats page for average view duration. If it's under 15 seconds, the problem is usually one of three things:

  • Your first photo doesn't match the search query
  • Your title promises something the listing doesn't deliver
  • Your price shocks them (add context if your product is premium)

8. Mobile Optimization (All Metrics)

Roughly 70% of Etsy traffic comes from mobile devices. If your listing looks bad on a phone, you're losing sales.

The fix: Preview every listing on mobile before publishing. Check that:

  • The first photo is clear at thumbnail size (small text or fine details get lost)
  • The title isn't cut off after 60 characters on mobile
  • The description is scannable (short paragraphs, no walls of text)
  • The "Add to cart" button is visible without scrolling

Our Etsy mobile optimization guide has the specific fixes for each of these.

How to Prioritize Your Fixes

Not all 8 factors matter equally at every stage. Here's the order to tackle them:

  1. Start with tags and title — these get you found
  2. Fix your first photo — this gets you clicked
  3. Improve your description and additional photos — these get you sold
  4. Build reviews — this compounds everything

If your CTR is below 2%, focus on your title and first photo first. If your CTR is above 4% but your conversion rate is below 1%, focus on your description, photos, and pricing.

A Note on "Etsy Listing Quality Score"

You may have heard the term "Etsy listing quality score" — it's not an official Etsy metric. Etsy doesn't publish a quality score for individual listings the way Google does for ads. What Etsy does use is a combination of relevance signals (title, tags, category) and engagement signals (CTR, conversion rate, review quality).

The score we've outlined here is the closest you can get to a practical, actionable number that tells you whether your listing is healthy or needs work.
